Viessmann F2, the Vitodens overheat lockout
F2 on a Vitodens is an overheat. The stainless heat exchanger is rarely the villain: nine times out of ten the water simply is not moving fast enough to carry the heat away.
What triggers an overheat
The boiler measures flow and return temperatures constantly. If the flow temperature climbs too fast, or the difference between flow and return grows too wide, the control board concludes that heat is not being carried away and locks out on F2.
That is a circulation problem in almost every case we attend.
The usual causes
We check these in order before considering anything expensive.
- Pump seized, air locked or running at too low a speed setting.
- Air in the system, particularly after refilling or radiator work.
- Sludge and magnetite restricting the heat exchanger or radiators.
- Closed or partially closed isolation valves, often after other work.
- Failed flow or return temperature sensor reporting false readings.
Safe checks
Only two things are worth doing yourself.
- Check system pressure reads roughly 1 to 1.5 bar cold.
- Feel whether radiators heat evenly, and note any that stay cold.
What we do about it
We test the pump, purge air, verify sensor readings against measured temperatures, check the flow and return differential under load, and inspect the system water for magnetite. Where sludge is the cause we cleanse the system, dose fresh inhibitor and fit a magnetic filter so it does not return.
Vitodens boilers are well built and long lived. Sorting the circulation properly is what keeps that stainless heat exchanger in service for years.

- What does F2 mean on a Viessmann Vitodens?
- F2 is an overheat lockout. The boiler measured a temperature above its safe limit and shut down, usually because water is not moving through the heat exchanger quickly enough.
- Does F2 mean the heat exchanger has failed?
- Usually not. In most cases the heat exchanger is fine and the problem is circulation: a seized or air locked pump, sludge, closed valves or a failed sensor.
- Can I reset an F2 fault?
- Reset once. If it locks out again, stop. Repeatedly forcing a boiler through an overheat condition is how a repairable fault becomes an expensive one.
