Frozen condensate pipe, why the boiler stopped in the cold
Almost every modern condensing boiler drains acidic condensate down a small plastic pipe. When that pipe freezes, the boiler cannot drain and it shuts itself down on purpose.
How to spot it
The pattern is unmistakable: a hard frost overnight, then no heating in the morning, often with a gurgling or bubbling noise from the boiler and a lockout code on the display. Follow the white plastic pipe from the underside of the boiler to where it exits the wall.
Thawing it safely
Done carefully this is a job most people can do themselves.
- Use warm water, around the temperature of a hot bath, never boiling.
- Pour it slowly along the exposed outdoor length, concentrating on bends and the open end.
- A hot water bottle or a microwaveable heat pack held against the pipe works well.
- Never use a heat gun, blowtorch or naked flame on plastic pipework.
- Once water flows freely, reset the boiler and give it a few minutes to fire.
Stopping it happening again
If it froze once it will freeze again, because the cause is the installation rather than the weather. The usual fixes are lagging the external run properly, upsizing the outdoor pipe, correcting the fall so condensate cannot pool, adding a trace heater, or re-routing the pipe internally into a waste so it never sees the cold at all.
Plenty of Warwickshire properties have long condensate runs down an outside wall from a loft or first floor boiler, and those are the ones that freeze first every winter.
Questions we get asked
- How do I know the condensate pipe is frozen?
- The boiler locks out in freezing weather, often with a gurgling noise, and there is a white plastic pipe running from the boiler to an outside drain. If that pipe is cold and blocked with ice, that is your fault.
- Can I thaw it myself?
- Usually yes. Pour warm, not boiling, water along the exposed outdoor section, or hold a hot water bottle against it. Never use boiling water and never use a naked flame. Reset the boiler once flow returns.
- How do I stop it happening again?
- Lag the external run with weatherproof insulation, increase the pipe diameter outdoors, improve the fall so water cannot sit in it, or re-route it internally into a waste pipe. We do all four depending on the property.
