Baxi E133, ignition failure explained
E133 is the most common Baxi lockout we get called to. It means the boiler asked for gas, sparked, and never saw a flame, so it shut the gas off.
What the code means
On Baxi and Potterton boilers, E133 covers ignition failure and gas supply faults. The boiler will normally attempt ignition several times before locking out, and the display holds the code until it is reset.
It is a safety response, not a fault with the safety system.
Common causes
These are the causes we find, roughly in order of frequency.
- Blocked or frozen condensate pipe, particularly on external runs in winter.
- No gas: emergency control valve closed, prepayment meter out of credit, or a supply issue.
- Ignition electrodes worn, sooted or out of gap.
- Flame sensing or earthing fault, so the flame lights but is not detected.
- Gas valve fault, or an appliance that has drifted out of adjustment.
What you can check safely
Before booking anything, check the free things.
- Does the gas hob light? If not, the problem is the supply, not the boiler.
- Is there credit on the meter?
- Is the condensate pipe outside frozen? Thaw with warm, not boiling, water.
- Reset once only, then leave it if the code returns.

We test gas working pressure and gas rate, clear and check the condensate route, inspect and reset the electrodes, measure flame current and analyse combustion. That establishes the actual cause rather than replacing parts speculatively.

- E133 is an ignition or gas supply fault. The boiler ran its ignition sequence, no flame was established, and it locked out.
- Why does E133 keep coming back after a reset?
- Because the underlying cause is still there. A blocked condensate pipe, a gas supply problem or worn electrodes will produce the same lockout every time until they are dealt with.
- Does E133 mean I need a new boiler?
- Rarely. It is usually a repair, often a condensate blockage, an electrode set or a gas supply issue. We diagnose it before anyone starts talking about replacement.
